Research Residency in Visual Arts with Grant
In keeping with its goal of bringing together research and artistic creation, the Foundation annually awards a CA$5,000 grant and a one-month residency to a specialist recognized in the visual arts, environment or any other discipline concerned with these issues.
Call for Projects
The Foundation’s residency program has been enriched and now runs over an approximately 12-month cycle. It includes a 4-week stay at the Foundation dedicated to research and writing, a presentation of ongoing work for a general audience, and a research grant. The program aims to culminate—subject to grants being obtained—in the production of a public outreach project at the Foundation that may take the form of a publication, a group exhibition or public programs (a symposium, a series of lectures, workshops, etc.).
The initial stay offers the researcher in residence a focused time to reflect and write on the Foundation’s premises. One professional meeting is planned with a member of the Foundation team or its committee of experts, on the basis of the proposed project. A public event allowing the researcher to share the ongoing research is planned towards the end of the stay.
By mutual agreement, the researcher in residence and the Grantham Foundation can decide to develop a project for public dissemination at the Foundation. The researcher agrees to work in collaboration with the Foundation’s scientific committee and to participate in the search for funding. Any production or publication resulting from work undertaken at the Foundation must mention the Foundation’s support.
Through its long-term commitment, the Foundation wishes to provide meaningful support for the development and dissemination of thoughtful, innovative projects whose subject, materials or process reflects the importance of the aesthetic and global issues related to the environment in the Anthropocene age.
Eligibility
The program is intended for researchers who reside in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada or abroad, whether they are affiliated with a research institution or not. Also eligible are all but dissertation (ABD) doctoral candidates, independent researchers, art critics and exhibition curators, as well as artists with a curatorial practice.
The projects submitted must be in keeping with the Grantham Foundation’s mission and objectives. Visual arts are defined as practices recognized as such professionally—photography, installation, sculpture, painting, graphic art, performance—as well as sound art, digital and media practices.
Duos are eligible. conditions offered remain the same. Projects and work toward a university degree are not eligible. ABD doctoral candidates wishing to submit a project must specify their institutional affiliation and the name of their thesis adviser.
Please note that researchers coming from abroad are responsible for completing the administrative procedures required to allow them to enter Canada and remain in Quebec for the duration of their stay.
Endowment
In addition to being hosted by the Foundation, the residency consists of a CA$ 5,000 grant, which includes a living allowance, a residence fee, a fee for a public presentation, and a research grant. The Foundation also provides logistical and administrative support for putting together grant applications and producing the proposed project.
An additional lump sum of no more than CA$ 500 is provided to cover a portion of the travel expenses of researchers whose place of residence is located beyond a radius of 500 km from Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham.
Residency location
The Foundation is located next to a small river, in a wooded area on the edge of a forest, in the francophone municipality of Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham, some 100 km east of Montreal. Both a living space, a workspace and an exhibition space, it was designed to foster an all-season dialogue between the indoor spaces and the outside surroundings.
Researchers have access to the wooded area, the river and the adjacent forest. Their work must be carried out with a sense of respect for the integrity of the location.

Length of stay and dates
Research-driven stay, for 4 continuous weeks. Exact dates, between January and August or December 2024, to be established in consultation with the researcher.
Presentation of application
Applicants must present:
a general presentation of research interests and methodology (1 page maximum)
a description of the proposed project, specifying its relevance relative to the Foundation’s mission, any other potential contributors, as well as a desired schedule for the stay (2 pages maximum)
an overview of expected results and project impact (1 page maximum)
a curriculum vitae (3 pages maximum)
1 or 2 examples of previous publications
if applicable: documentation of 1 or 2 curatorial projects or other relevant projects (5 pages maximum, with full captions and credits)
Documents must be assembled in this order in a single PDF (maximum 1Gb). The file must be submitted byWeTransfer to projets@fondationgrantham.org.
An acknowledgment of receipt is sent within 2 working days following reception of the file. Only complete applications that comply with these guidelines will be considered by the selection committee.
Selection process
The Foundation’s scientific committee acts as selection committee. All applicants receive a response once the selection process is complete, no later than July 14, 2023.
